Passing to play forward

game - 3v3+1 with the aim of hitting the target player and scoring off him/her

can minimize touches to challenge players

EXERCISE

Passing to play forward

Coaching as shown at end of animation.

PASSING TO PLAY FORWARD 2

Passing to play forward

Coaching as shown at end of animation.

Break down the technique of the driven pass and movement out wide. Also address scanning, especially as the ball is traveling to end player who must recognise where pressure is coming from and play the other side

GAME

3v3 in the middle (add a roaming player if you want to have more success for players of a lesser ability)

After a minimum of 2 passes the team in possession are looking to pass or dribble out of the middle zone to create a 3v2 to goal in the direction they are shooting.

If defenders win the ball they pass into the small goals. Keep scores and be competitive.

Coach:

Width and pace when attacking
Committing defenders and playing disguised passes
Defending out numbered

Progressions:

If team win the ball in middle third they can break out immediately

If defenders win the ball when 3v2 instead of scoring in small goals they can pass back into their 3 to continue the game and hopefully start and instant attack

On breakout to final third allow a recovering defender to help the 2 current defenders which will put pressure on attackers to attack at pace

DEVELOPMENT

Set up as before but when the pass is played into the striker a defender comes to press that pass (rotate defenders often or introduce a player rotation from the start).

Decision Making:

Play the support player or spin for the shot/dribble to goal - this will depend on the defenders pressure/positioning.

Possible progressions:

If the defender wins the ball they get a point by playing a wide player who is waiting to go next (transition). Further transition would be to allow the defender to go all the way to the other goal under pressure of those who just lost the ball and using the support of his/her team mates who are still on the pitch from the previous turn (essentially becomes a 3v3 game)

INTRO

Combination to goal race, focusing on movement to support the striker.

On a short field the keeper works on a driven pass into the strikers feet and that pass is then supported by a wide player looking to get a shot on goal

Focus:

Sharp pass
Sharp movement
Varied movements
Quality of ball striking
Accuracy of finishing

Advance:

Limit touches
Add disguised return pass to striker
Striker set and spin movement
Set/play the ball in the air to work on volley/half volleys/heading

MOVEMENT SCANNING PASSING

Movement / Scanning / Passing

4v4+1 exercise to promote movement, scanning and passing abilities in young players

A goal is scored each time the team in possession pass the ball to a team mate through a gate

Coaching:

-Creating angles in possession
-Making the pitch big in possession
-Patients to create the killer pass through the gate
-Constant movement
-Weight and quality of pass

Possible Progressions:

*Can't go through the same colour gate twice in a row
*Play 2 touch
*1 touch when passing through a gate
*A point for a long pass controlled within a gate
*Add goals/shooting and any phase of possesion that goes through 3 gates you can then look to score in a goal

PHASE OF PLAY

9v7 on a pitch that has an area that only the strikers can come into and play 2 touch maximum in there. One they touch the ball the game is live, only. the back 2 for the blue team can't go beyond the strikers area.

if red team win the ball its just a live game

Progressions:

Remove area and create 8v8 free play
